Privacy Policy

The sciebo Android app is based on the ownCloud Android app which ownCloud GmbH built as an Open Source app.

This page is used to inform visitors regarding our policies with the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information if anyone decided to use our service.

If you choose to use our service, then you agree to the collection and use of information in relation to this policy.

The terms used in this Privacy Policy have the same meanings as in our Terms and Conditions, which is accessible at the sciebo Android app unless otherwise defined in this Privacy Policy.

Data Collection and Use

The app does not use third party services that collect data used to identify users beyond those that the marketplace providers mandate, e.g. the Google Play Services for Android Apps purchased through the Google Play Store. As personal and sensible information:

Personally identifiable information: The sciebo Android app does not handle personal information. Signing up in the app is not possible, so, personal data is never managed inside beyond the chosen username (to be set up in the sciebo service).

Authentication information: As stated above, the sciebo Android app communicates with the sciebo servers operated by Münster University. ownCloud GmbH does not have any kind of access to sciebo servers and receives authentication data from nowhere.

Some aspects about authentication information:

  • The sciebo Android app manages accounts attached to the Account Service.
  • The sciebo Android app will only manage accounts with “owncloud” type, which identifies its own authenticator. That means that the sciebo Android app accesses only accounts that were previously added using the app itself.
  • The sciebo Android app checks the validity of apps with such authenticator (owncloud)
  • The sciebo Android app does not share neither upload any other information related to other kind of accounts in the device.

Device Storage: The sciebo Android app will store in the device those user files that are downloaded from user servers. ownCloud GmbH does not have access to such information. Explicit permission is asked in the first installation, so that the sciebo Android app will be granted to read and write from device storage.

Contacts: The sciebo Android app does not share contacts information with third party apps. Such information is never published and is nowhere divulged.

Device location: The sciebo Android app does not use device location.

SMS and call related data: The sciebo Android app does not use SMS and call services.

Inventory of other apps on the device: The sciebo Android app does not use the list of users’ apps inside the device.

Microphone: The sciebo Android app does not use the built-in microphone.

Financial and payment information: Payments and banking data are no used in the sciebo Android app.

Camera: The sciebo Android app can use the camera app to take photos or videos that will be uploaded to the sciebo servers as new files.

Google Play Services

Log Data

We want to inform you that whenever you use our service, in a case of an error the sciebo Android app collects data and information (through third party products) on your phone called Log Data. This Log Data may include information such as your device Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, device name, operating system version, the configuration of the app when utilizing our service, the time and date of your use of the service, paths of local and remote files, and other statistics. This data has debugging purposes and is never shared with other service provider.

Cookies

Cookies are files with a small amount of data that are commonly used as anonymous unique identifiers. These are sent to your browser from the websites that you visit and are stored on your device’s internal memory.

This kind of information is usually handled by websites and web browsers. This is not the case of the sciebo Android app. Cookie management and its information is out of our scope.

Service Providers

The sciebo Android app does not share any kind of information with external service providers.

Security

We value your trust in providing us your personal information, thus we are striving to use commercially acceptable means of protecting it. But remember that no method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure and reliable, and we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

The sciebo Android app may contain links to other sites. If you click on a third-party link, you will be directed to that site. Note that these external sites are not operated by us. Therefore, we strongly advise you to review the Privacy Policy of these websites. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites or services.

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. Thus, you are advised to review this page periodically for any changes. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
